It used to be that high-speed internet was only for those of us whose last name was Rockefeller. Nowadays, though- with various options to go with- and plenty of companies out there to boot- prices have fallen, and continue to fall, and so, the question- how do you find the best provider??

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer
  • Some time
  • Ability to research
  1. Step 1

Find out what providers are out there for your area. There are a couple of big ones, like Embarq and Earthlink, but there are some small companies that provide service to a region or a city. It pays to research, so don't skimp on this.

  2. Step 2

Compare plans. With most providers, you're charged based on plans that differ in download/upload rates. The more speed you want, the more you'll pay. Also, with DSL, you're also charged based on your distance from the company's access point. The farther away- the more you'll pay.

  3. Step 3

Find out about each company's tech support. Your internet connection- like anything else- can and will go down from time to time. Finding out why could be a sync, or it could take forever- depending on how knowledgeable a company's tech support and troubleshooting staff are. If a company offers a really cheap rate- it may be because they don't have good tech support.

  4. Step 4

Compare features. Many ISP providers give numerous options along with their services (e-mail, website building tools, special tools, speed downloading), so, depending on what you want to use your internet connection for, if two or more providers are close in your quest, comparing features might be what you need to choose the provider best for you

Tips & Warnings
  • Do your research. I cannot emphasize this enough. There are tons of options out there- so do your homework, and it'll pay off
  • Try to buy the DSL modem yourself from the store instead of renting it. Most companies charge either a per-month fee, or charge you extra to buy it from them. Go to the store and buy it yourself- you'll get a better deal.
  • If you are likely to want to connect more than one computer to your DSL connection (either now or at some stage in the future), check the networking features of the provider. Some DSL providers include networking capabilities at no extra cost.
  • Make sure you can get DSL in your area. Not all areas have it available.
  • Check to see if your house already has the necessary wiring for DSL. If not, you'll have to make sure you can get it installed, otherwise, all that effort will be for naught.
