Boy's rooms have to be fun, tough, safe and above all cool. A "boy" room is different from a "girl" or "baby" room. This is how to decorate a basic room that can grow with a young boy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • room and window measurements
  • some money
  • some time
  1. Step 1
Wooden toys used as wall decorations.

Before you begin decide what your son will need. Do you have right type of bed? Would you like another bed for guests? Is it time to get your son a desk? Do you need more storage for toys, books and clothes? Take room and window measurements before you go shopping.

  2. Step 2
    Primary colors always work together.

    Primary colors always work together.

Find or make a bedspread and window treatments in a fabric that incorporates or works with your child's favorite color. Denim is great. It is boyish, washable and goes with everything. Another choice would be a plaid or an abstract print that includes a bit of the favorite color or a mixture of primary colors. Whatever you chose be sure it works with your flooring.

  3. Step 3
Dark color used on lower half of room. Neutral fabrics make this room acceptable for a teen.

Paint is the second purchase because it can be mixed to work with the fabric. If your child is old enough pick out a few paint chips that work and let him chose. If he picks a bright or dark color use it on only one wall or the bottom half of the room.

  4. Step 4
    Framed book jackets.

Now comes the fun part pick a theme for the accessories. Choose something your son loves. Dinosaurs, Trucks, Baseball. Since your son's toys and equipment probably already reflect this theme you don't have to do much. A few pictures or a wall paper border. A lamp shop can make a lamp out of a toy rocket for a space room. Make drawer pulls out of alphabet blocks for a toddler. Don't spend much money because a boy interests change quickly.

  5. Step 5

As your boy grows change the accessories in his room to reflect his current interests. He will let you know what is "cool". You may not always be able to get what he wants, but try to eliminate things he has out grown so he can always be proud of his room.

Tips & Warnings
  • A primary color scheme allows you mix and match and take advantage of sale items. It is also easy to replace anything that is damaged.
  • most boys don't have many clothes. Consider adding shelves in the closet for toy storage
  • most boys have only a few outfits which need to hang. Consider storing these another room using the closet for a study area with a desk and shelves.
  • Top bunks are not recommended for children under 6
  • Drapery and blind cords are a strangulation hazard and should be avoided.
  • Cloth or roller shades and valences or cornices are safe choice for window treatments. Curtains are just too much fun to hide in and swing from.
  • Your boy and his friends will find creative uses for everything in his room
