In this article I will explain how to ride your horse safely!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tack
  • Horse =)
  1. Step 1

You don’t want your saddle to become loose while riding, so check your girth. This should be done before you start to go riding, and then in the middle of the ride to make sure there has been no change.

  2. Step 2

Check your bridle to make sure all the pieces are in good shape and connected correctly prior to each ride. Your bridle could come off if you’ve forgotten to hook the throat latch, etc.

  3. Step 3

If you want to have a halter and lead rope on your horse during the ride, check everything to make sure it is all connected safely. You do not want the lead rope to become loose while riding. It could be hazardous if the lead starts to hang at the horse’s chest, etc. This could be extremely dangerous for you and your horse. The best way to avoid these types of problems would be to detach the lead rope and put it in your saddle bags while riding. Also, use a break-away halter. It's always the safest =)

  4. Step 4

When you are on a trail, I do not recommend using a tie-down. Not only does it cause your horse to have balance problems, but it also puts him in danger of drowning if you encounter water. If a tie down is a must for your horse. Make sure he can still move his head enough to have good balance. Also, always remove the tie-down when coming to an area with water.

  5. Step 5

Protect your horse against insects, flies, mosquitoes, etc. Not only could your horse contract West Nile, but if your horse is constantly distracted by insects, accidents could occur.

  6. Step 6

Do not wear clothing or accessories that could cause potential harm to your or your horse. Clothing need to fit closely to your body. Do not where things that can catch easily. Items like straps, zippers, layers, etc, should not be worn. Snaps are excellent and are found on most riding apparel.

  7. Step 7

Do not ever go riding alone without at least one person knowing about it. Someone should know an approximate time for your return just incase you or your horse have a problem on the trail and need help.
Hope this helps!!! AND have fun!!!
