herbal nutrition supplement - which herbs are best?
herbal nutrition supplement - which herbs are best?

The medicinal qualities of herbs have been recorded for centuries. Western researchers are going back to re-look at certain popular medicinal herbs in an attempt to explain their mechanism of action from a 'western science' perspective and are discovering previously unknown properties......... Some offer clinically proven, safe alternatives to dangerous pharmaceutical drugs........... Herbal extracts are critical ingredients for nutritional health/vitamin supplements or a herbal nutrition supplement. But you can only include so many in a supplement so which ones are considered the most effective and important, with the widest range of health benefits? ............Which ones should you look for in a supplement formula and why?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Free Time - to study supplement labels and/or websites
  • Money - The most effective herbal nutrition supplements don't cost the same as supermarket multivitamins!
  • The desire to place your health very high on your list of life priorities
  1. Step 1

Learn which herbs are accepted as the most effective and check for them when comparing herbal nutrition supplements. See the list below.

These are often missing because being the best means they're expensive! Look for a herbal nutrition supplement or health supplement with as many of these as you can find. The more the better
If there are only a handful, you're looking at a basic supplement - for topping up nutrient deficiencies.

    Turmeric:
Very well known herb with multiple medicinal properties. An absolute must for any herbal nutrition supplement or health/vitamin supplement. Check the active ingredient potency. You want a high potency of 90% up to get the benefits: eg (95% Curcumin)

    Green Tea:
Super high antioxidant and numerous other medicinal properties. Again you want very high active ingredient potencies - like this: (98% Polyphenols; 80% Catechins)

    Bilberry:
Probably the most important herb for your eyes but also EXTREMELY expensive so it's usually missing or in paltry dose amounts eg 10mg or less. Due to its price, a 25% potency is about the highest you'll find. (25% Anthocyanins)

    Gingko Biloba:
Another expensive ingredient but a 'must have' as far as your brain is concerned. A quality herbal nutrition supplement should include several neuro-nutrients and Gingko MUST be there. Leading potencies are: ( 25% Gingko Flavonoglycosides; 6% Terpene Lactones)

    Olive Leaf:
Only leading supplements contain this versatile and potent herb. The major active is oleuropein. eg (20% Oleuropein). Too many medicinal abilities to list here (Google it!)

    Milk Thistle:
Market leading supplements must target All your organs/systems. Milk Thistle is recognized as the best for your liver. Highest potencies in quality supplements fall between 80-90% eg (85% Silymarins)

    Black Cumin:
A unique medicinal herb reportedly used for over 2000 years. Black cumin seed tackles gastrointestinal conditions, respiratory conditions and used as an anti-hypertensive, immunoprotectant and anti-cancer agent.

    Pine Bark:
Known as Pycnogenol. The group of antioxidants in pine bark extract are some of the most powerful. Leading herbal nutrition supplements include this extract with very high potencies (90% up) eg (90% Proanthocyanidins)

  2. Step 2

Understand the term 'Standardization' and then check for it.

Standardization is a process that supplement manufacturers rely on to ensure batch to batch consistency of ingredients in herbal nutrition supplements. Active ingredient amounts can vary tremendously when herbs are grown and processed hence the need for standardization. It is the industry standard!

Check a company's website or supplement bottle label– if they use standardized extracts then you'll see the active ingredient percentage(s) listed (like the examples I've given in this article).

  3. Step 3

Find and read through the raw material testing protocols on a supplement company's website.

This is important for your safety and for finding the very best supplements. Contaminated ingredients are always a concern for reputable manufacturers. See tips and warnings below!

Tips & Warnings
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80 percent of the Earth’s population uses a form of herbal medicine in their health care.
  • Herbals are ingredients most susceptible to contamination. Using herbs requires strict preparation, handling and testing protocols. When considering a herbal nutrition supplement look for detailed information on testing protocols in the manufacturers website. If you can't find anything then this raises a red flag and shows they have something to hide!
  • Herbs come in three forms: Whole herb (powdered), Herbal Extract and Standardized Herbal Extract. In the case of herbs containing actives with proven pharmacological benefits, standardized herbal extracts are what you want - as per this article.
  • Many vitamin/health supplements contain: poor choices of less effective (and cheaper) herbal ingredients, missing key active ingredients and insignificant potencies and dose amounts, far below the levels which have produced health benefits in clinical studies.
  • Since herbs are key ingredients, dose amounts need monitoring when comparing brands. An effective herbal nutrition supplement will include ALL herbal extract ingredients with dose amounts generally falling between 30mg to 100mg. You won't find many extracts at more than 100mg unless the supplement costs a small fortune. 20 mg or less is considered a very small dose amount.
  • There are several other extremely useful medicinal herbs but the eight listed here represent the most effective first choices you should aim for in a herbal nutrition supplement or health supplement.
  • I have reviewed hundreds of supplements including some multi nutrient health supplements containing these eight extracts (and more) at/close to the recommended dose amounts and guideline potencies shown above. They're out there! (See the resources links below)
  • Certain herbs when combined can cancel each other out! A safe, top of the line herbal nutrition supplement will have been formulated only by a bio-scientist/chemist. If the formulator's detailed credentials/background are not on a supplement website move on! Renowned credentials naturally get promoted/marketed!
  • Less reputable companies do not use standardized herbal extracts because they are significantly more expensive. Some of the largest, most well known US based supplement companies slip some non- standardized extracts into their formulas (hoping you'll only notice the standardized ones and be impressed with the scientific lingo printed next to them!)
  • The supplement I use contains all eight of these herbal extracts plus another five. But it's far more than a herbal nutrition supplement. It contains 97 ingredients and the fifth generation formula (released August 2008) sets a new standard in the nutritional health supplement industry. Use 'The supplement I use' link in the resources section below if you'd like to know more.
