Learn how to design a flower arrangement in a pumpkin for the fall holidays! This is one easy project and it will last about one week. Fresh flower pumpkin arrangements are great gifts too.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small pumpkin
  • fresh flower variety arrangement.
  • Floral Foam for live plants
  • fake or live punks
  • fresh ferns
  • leaves (multicolored)
  1. Step 1
Pick a pumpkin that is round, not oblong.

Pick a pumpkin that is round, not oblong.

First step is to pick out the pumpkin. This pumpkin should be round shaped to make the arrangement look its best. You don't want a lopsided arrangement when your done. Look for a nice round pumpkin no oblong ones. Start with a small one until you get the hang of it. The ones in the picture are about 5 inches across. Cut the pumpkin strait across at the top, below the stem but far enough down so you have a wide opening. Clean out all the seeds and guts of the pumpkin dig into the soft part to remove anything that is soft so the pumpkin will last longer. Cut your floral foam piece to fit snugly inside the pumpkin so it won't move. Take it out, and soak it for a few minutes in water so it will absorb lots of water.

  2. Step 2
    Choosing Flowers

    Choosing Flowers

Begin choosing your fresh flowers that would go nicely in your pumpkin arrangement. First, choose a tall flower to be the focal point in your arrangement. This goes to the back in the center. Then I choose a center flower to be placed in front of the focal flower which will be lower then the focal point flower. From this point, I choose flowers by 2's. They will be matched by same color or same shape on each side to build the shape of the arrangement.

  3. Step 3
    Finished arrangement

After you fill in your larger flowers in various matching locations on each side, you will need to fill in the gaps with smaller flowers. Use your imagination! Step back and look at your progress and rearrange it if you like. Once you have filled in all the gaps, you can accent the arrangement with fall leaves and punks (found in Craft stores). This will add some color and will make the arrangement more eye catching. Last of all, add some Boston fern leaves on the back left and right corners of the pumpkin arrangement.

Tips & Warnings
  • These should last about a week.
  • You can add whatever accents you like.
  • Experiment with different flowers but Mums work really well and are hardy.
  • If you're making one as a gift, you can store it in the refrigerator overnight to keep it fresh.
  • My next article will be on using any leftover fresh flowers in other simpler arrangements!
  • Be careful when cutting the top off the pumpkin. They can be difficult at times, and I had to use a butcher knife to get it started as the skin was so hard.

on 3/19/2009 Thanks for the interesting tips about making a fresh flower pumplin arrangement. I remember shopping around Halloween time and thinking how very expensive premade decorations were. Next time I'll think about making my own.
