Freelance Writing

Finding affordable health insurance as a freelance writer is the one obstacle that prevents many writers from quitting their jobs and flying solo. By employing the same research qualities writers’ use to research their work, they can find health insurance options that will fit their pocket book. No longer should a freelance writer use the lack of available insurance as the sole reason to remain at an unfulfilling job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact the Editorial Freelancers Association and request membership. Freelance writers who are members of the Editorial Freelance Association may obtain health insurance at discounted rates.

  2. Step 2

New York Residents should check out the Freelancer’s Union. They offer health insurance to New York members. One attractive feature to the Freelancers Union is that membership is free and they offer a variety of health insurance plans. Writers can also obtain quotes for dental, term life and long-term disability.

  3. Step 3

Seek health insurance through the National Writers Association Health Insurance program. Membership to the National Writers Association involves annual membership dues. Once a member, writers can seek and obtain health insurance through their program.

  4. Step 4

Visit the National Writer’s Union website. The National Writer’s Union offers dental, health and vision plans for writers who have been members of the National Writers Union for over 90 days.

  5. Step 5

Look into the Writer’s Guild of America. The Writer’s Guild of America offers health insurance plans, but writers are subject to rather strict eligibility requirements.

  6. Step 6

Don’t stop with this list. Do a little more research. There are several health insurance options for freelance writers. Take some time and go through quite a few to ensure you’re getting the best rate and coverage.

Tips & Warnings
