The best part about camping is the camp fire itself. With the fall season just around the corner and the outdoor adventures it always brings. I wanted to share with you one of my families favorite campfire treats.

This healthy and still tasty snack can be made at home on your grill too.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • oranges
  • muffin mix
  • knife
  • aluminum foil
  • campfire
  • or home grill
  1. Step 1

Mom, Dad or another responsible adult cuts a small opening in the top of the oranges. Just big enough so the kids can dig in with a spoon and eat the healthy orange inside. ( set the top aside you will use it again later )

  2. Step 2

Next get the muffin mix ready according to the instructions on the box.
A little tip: make sure it's the muffin flavor taste good with oranges.

  3. Step 3

Now fill the inside of the eaten orange with your prepared muffin mix. Only fill the orange about half way. ( Before filling the orange make sure you dig out the entire orange so the inside wall is dry.. Tell the kids not to poke holes in sides of the oranges the mix sometimes leaks)

  4. Step 4

Next replace the top of the orange you cut away in step one. Try to make the top fit back on as snug as possible.

  5. Step 5

Wrap each orange individually with aluminum foil.

  6. Step 6

Place each foil wrapped orange directly on red hot ambers in the camp fire. Placing them directly on some campfire flames may burn the outside of the orange to quickly.

  7. Step 7

After 5-10 the muffin mix inside is fully baked inside and you and your quest will enjoy a orange flavored healthy snack.
We eat our for breakfast and sometimes as a special treat sprinkled a 1/4 tsp of sugar in the mix.

Tips & Warnings
  • fill the orange about half way with the uffin mix,
  • try to make the inside of the orange dry prior to pouring in the mix
  • scrap the inside of the orange
  • if an orange does get a hole in it prior to you pouring in the mix wrap it really tight with the foil .
  • caution when removing the foil wraps from the fire we often use a good pair of welding gloves we bought brand new and always bring them along on our camping trips.
  • Only adults should handle the knife and take the treats from the fire
