Step 1
As with any pet illness, the first stop should be the vet to see how the sickness can stop. If it is just an upset stomach or any other sickness that you know (and you know your animal better than anyone) you may want to wait.
-
Step 2
Holding your dog is the first option of comfort. In my house, it isn't a question of when, but the statement of now. My dog, even though he is 40 pounds expect me to hold him during his sickness. Most dogs are the same.
-
Step 3
Dog petting and talking to doggie isn't another option when my pup is sick, it's mandatory. He wants me to acknowledge and try to make him feel better. As owners we can talk to the dog and while we may just be reading a credit card statement, they love to hear our voice.
-
Step 4
Making sure there is enough water in the dish. While food isn't always an option, water is essential. Sick dogs dehydrate quickly and need more water than at other times.
-
Step 5
Bedding close to the owner. When my dog is sick, he won't be sitting on anything but his bed and if I don't move it, then he will, right next to me. This familiar bed keeps him safe and secure while feeling ill.
