Of the many exterior finishes on homes, vinyl, aluminum, and wood are the easiest to paint.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Vinyl and aluminum siding have been preprinted before they are installed.

These will however, deteriorate over the years and need to be repainted.

Wood siding, on the other hand, is painted soon after installation. and must be redone more often than the other two common materials.

  2. Step 2

Once you have successfully cleaned the exterior, make sure that all attached items are firmly in place.

Plan how you will complete your work.
Always apply paint on areas when they are in the shade.
Work from the top to the bottom.
Work to complete one horizontal area at a time, that is from window to window or door to window, so there are no overlapping marks.

Get all your equipment in place and organized. This includes paints, thinners, brushes, cloths, ladders, protective gear etc.

Protect areas you do not want painted including driveways, porches, plants and grass. You may need large drop cloths in some areas.

  3. Step 3

Paint first the underside of horizontal members.

Use a narrow, 3 inch, brush for this.

Remember to start at the top of the wall and work your way down.

  4. Step 4

Now paint the outer face of the horizontal members.

Again, start from the top and work down, checking the undersides as you go.

  5. Step 5

You can easily paint your whole house using brushes. This is actually best as you can brush in the paint. It may not be the fastest, but it gives the best result.

If you wish you can use rollers or paint pads on the siding. Use a roller pad that suits the texture of the siding you have.

You can paint the exterior of your home by spraying. When you spray paint, keep the sprayer moving and overlap your passes. Do vertical area first, then horizontal ones. Spraying does the fastest BUT the least successful job. Spraying uses significantly more paint. The paint must also be thinner for use in a sprayer and of course you have not brushed it in so areas may be prone to quicker wear and tear.
