Here are some simple ideas for a Halloween pumpkin carving party. Have mini pumpkins for small Jack-o-lanterns for guests to build votives to take home or have your guests carve them at home, and line them up for judging.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mini Pumpkins
  • Candles
  • Pumpkin Carving Tools, if needed
  • Glue and crafting tools, if needed
  • Long Table with Table Cloth if displaying for judging
  1. Step 1

When the guests have arrived and are ready, give each a hollowed out mini pumpkin and let them carve a face or other designs. Place on display and choose a winner. For dinner, place all of the Jack-o-lanterns on display and put to use as votives by placing tea candles inside them. Dim all the lights and allow the light shining from the pumpkins to be the focal point.

  2. Step 2

For children, have mini pumpkins available with all sorts of crafting knick knacks. Don't carve them before hand, but keep the whole with the stems on. Give the kids glitter, googly-eyes, pom poms, feathers, bits of paper, string and jewels. Give treats to all who participated and celebrate the winner.

  3. Step 3

Another idea is to have each guest bring a hollowed out and fully carved pumpkin to the dinner party instead of a hostess or host gift. Use these to decorate the room and allow each to be judged for different criteria already set up in the invitation (or leave as a surprise to the guests): best use of ribbon, best face, spookiest pumpkin, most elaborate and biggest dud. Make each one a winner. Place candles in them and place outside for the guests to view as they leave.

Tips & Warnings
  • How to make each guest feel like a winner is to never criticize the 'entries' and always include everyone in the judging.
  • While some may take the competition to extreme, remember that some people are not as physically adept in creating crafts so the focus should be on effort and uniqueness.
  • As with all parties, the main job is involve everyone and let them have a great time.
