Halloween is right around the corner which means it's time to search through the endless varieties of costumes for kids. If your children are like mine, then their minds can't seem to focus on just one choice. There are just too many choices for their little minds to handle. Last year, I tried this trick for getting my 5 year old to settle on one costume. It was quick, easy, and painless.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Imagination
  1. Step 1

First, try the most basic thing...ask your child what they want to be for Halloween. Sounds simple enough, but any parent can tell you that this can be a loaded question. If your child gives a confident answer to your question you can stop here. If not, then go on to Step 2.

  2. Step 2

Watch some T.V with your child or read some of his favorite books with him, making notes of what characters seem to excite him the most.

  3. Step 3

Now' s the time for your imagination. After compiling a list of your child's favorite characters, you need to figure out which costumes would fit into your budget and which are available to you (internet or retail stores).

  4. Step 4

Once your list is narrowed down to coolest and most affordable, you must now present the costume ideas to your child...more imagination needed here. Point out the coolest aspects of the characters/costumes.

  5. Step 5

Have your child narrow it down to 2 costumes, then compare the 2 and narrow it down to their favorite.

  6. Step 6

If your child is still not sure which one to choose, you can make the final choice (without your child realizing) by suggesting that you can dress up like one of the final 2 choices, but not the other. Your child will be sure to choose the costume where you can dress up alike.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once your child makes their choice, be sure to praise them. Even as adults, we still find making choices difficult sometimes. The more a child has a chance to choose for themselves, the better they will be at making good choices.
  • Don't present your child with too many choices. Three or Four choices is plenty!
