Here's a fashion don't!

Call it what you want; teasing, back combing, ratting, it's all the same. Teasing your hair is a way of adding instant lift and volume where you need it most. It became most popular back in the 1950's and has faded in and out ever since. I still remember the shock I felt when I asked my "way uncool" mom to show me how, and she knew how to better than anyone I've ever seen before!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair
  • Rat Comb
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

It actually helps if you DONT wash your hair immediately prior to back combing. The oils in your hair will help hold it in place better if you skip a day of washing. Comb or brush your hair out, removing all the tangles (unauthorized tangles, that is).

  2. Step 2

Take the section of your hair that you plan to tease and clip it up. Use a curling iron at the roots to give it lift. Hold the curling iron on the roots for 5-10 seconds, and release carefully. Try not to disturb the lift created by the curling iron. Allow to cool.

  3. Step 3

Using a rattail comb (the kind that is small, inexpensive and has a point on the handle of it) to begin to tease your hair. Grab a section of your hair that's about 2" thick, and hold it straight up, ensuring a bit of tension. Put the teeth of the comb about 3 inches away from your scalp, and push down. Repeat. If you're doing it correctly, you will probably feel like you're being "rubbed the wrong way"!

  4. Step 4

Practice makes perfect! If you have a friend to help, it will the job a little bit easier. Repeat this process several times in sections, and spray with a strong hold hair spray. Allow to set for a few moments.

  5. Step 5

Style hair as desired, and make sure to smooth the outside areas that can be seen so that they appear to be flat and smooth. You accomplish this by lightly combing only the top surface of the hair, "ignoring" the ratted hair underneath, or you can try using your hands and a tiny bit of water. This will ensure that you don't look like the girl pictured in this article.

  6. Step 6

Give one last coat of hairspray to ensure that you have that sexy diva big haired look. You look awesome, and you know it! :)

Tips & Warnings
  • The more you back comb each section, the more staying power your hair will have.
  • Don't do this daily; it does damage your hair and cause split ends.
