Got a small hole in the wall? Here is a fairly easy way to fix it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sharp knife or scissors, a piece of stiff cardboard, some spackle compound( available at any hardware), and a wide blade putty knife, a pencil or wooden dowel longer than the hole you will cut out and
  1. Step 1

First make sure there are no electrical wires in the area of the hole, just to be safe. You probably won't be touching any, but its best to be safe.

  2. Step 2

Assuming that the hole is roundish, take a sharp knife, preferably a razor-knife, and clean up the edges. Don't make it too big.

  3. Step 3

Take the stiff cardboard and cut it into a square about 1-2 inches bigger than the hole. Punch two small holes in the cardboard and run the string thru it, and tie it off. Put a thin layer of spackle around the edges of the cardboard that will be up against the INSIDE of the wallboard.

  4. Step 4

This step may be a bit tricky, but it can be done. Work the cardboard into the hole so that the side with the spackle in it is against the back of the wallboard. Gently pull the string taut and the cardboard will adhere to the back of the wallboard. Take the dowel, wrap the string around it and lay it across the hole and tie it off. Let this dry for about 1 hour.

  5. Step 5

After the above mentioned set-up has dried, clip the string from the dowel and lay the dowel aside. Now you have a backing in the hole. Clip the string from the cardboard, being careful not to pop the cardboard off the wall. Gently fill the shallow cavity with the spackle, and smooth it out. let dry according to instructions on the container. It may shrink a bit, if it does just use some more spackle and fill it in. Let this dry and sand the patch smooth. Paint to match the wall. If you did this right, you won't be able to tell where the patch was after painting

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands, and read the label on the spackle container.
