Step 1
Be flexible- Realize there are many ways to make venue look festive and expensive, without adding cost. Write what is a necessity (e.g.) dancing, wall for a slideshow projection, open space for games, etc. Then narrow your venue choices. If you do not need dancing or a slideshow you may consider a nice restaraunt. Often they will already have table cloths and only charge for food. Be willing to if choose an off-hour when they are slow and you may be able to negotiate a low price. Alternatively, you can have it at your house and save even more.

Step 2
Tablecloths and napkins- Nothing makes a party look brighter or more expensive than linens on the table. Check out some of the on-line stores. You can sometimes get a set of tablecloths and 8 napkins for $8 or less on clearance. If you don't like the clearance racks, visit your local fabric store. Often you can find suitable fabric for a dollar or two a yard. You hem or tear the edges (depending on your sewing skills) and voila.

Step 3
Decor- Look for decor that can double as party game gifts. Often you can find beautiful plants at the 99 Cents Store or Dollar Tree. Wrapping the pot in colored cellophane or fabric and adding a cloth bow can make a $5 gift look like a $50 gift. Alternatively, consider using balloons for decor. Balloons spread around the room can create a bright festive look without ruining your budget.

Step 4
Be creative with food- Cooking yourself can always save money. If it is a small get together, but you do not want to cook you may try buying premade frozen family style meals. Decorate with some springs of rosemary and voila. Alternatively get catering from a fast food restaraunt such as Taco Bell, El Pollo Loco, or Panda Express. Transfer the food to nice china and few will know it game from a fast food restaraunt.
