Rain Rot (also called: Streptothricosis, Dermatophilosis, and Rain Scald) is a disease of the skin which is usually is caused by wet conditions with hot temperature and high humidity. It generally appears as small scabs with paint brush like hair attached. This is usually found on the horses back but can also be found anywhere (or all over the horses body). It is not a fungus, but rather a actinomycete (has characterisitics of both fungi and bacteria). You can recognize the disease rather easily. Simply brushing your horse will cause the small scabs to appear. If left untreated, the disease can cause severe hair loss, etc.

  2. Step 2

In order to treat this disease, you will need to bathe your horse using 3 parts Iodine and 1 part Water. Scrub the effected area thoroughly (or the entire body if necessary). Leave the solution on the horse for 5-10 minutes, then rinse.

  3. Step 3

You will then need to spray a solution called Microtec on the area(s). Leave this solution on the horse.
This process should be done daily for a minimum of 1 1/2 to 2 weeks depending on how far the disease has progressed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cross ties work wonders if your horse doesn't like taking a bath ;)
  • Give your horse an apple waffer for being such a good baby after each treatment, they'll like that!
