Teaching English in Thailand is a wonderful way to visit a beautiful location and expand your horizons by being exposed to a new, exotic culture. English teachers are always in demand throughout Asia. Thailand does not like to hire from abroad, and schools usually prefer to deal with local teachers. The easiest way for you to teach English in Thailand is to head directly there.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Resume (burned onto a disc)
  • College transcripts
  • College diploma
  • Reference letters
  • Passport-size photos (at least 12)
  • Business attire and shoes, appropriate for interviews
  1. Step 1

Book a ticket to Bangkok, Thailand. Arrange accommodations for 10 days after you arrive. Bring your resume (burned onto a disc), copies of your college transcripts, several copies of your college diploma (in a protective case), reference letters, passport-size photos and carefully packed business attire and dress shoes.

  2. Step 2

Once you arrive, buy a local cell phone so that prospective employers can contact you by phone. Head to the Central Shopping Mall in Pinklao and purchase a phone (new or used phones are available), a SIM card and a prepaid phone card.

  3. Step 3

Go to an Internet cafe and input your new local phone number into your resume. Print 30 copies of your resume and store them carefully so they don’t get damaged.

  4. Step 4

Go to the Ajarn website and look for English teaching jobs. Email promising job postings. Stress that you are currently in Bangkok, that you are looking to work immediately and that you would like to have an interview. Paste your resume into the body of the email. Have your contact information clearly listed and send.

  5. Step 5

Check the responses to your email inquiries, dress nicely in your business clothes and head out to visit schools directly. Grab copies of your resume, transcripts, diploma, reference letters and photos and head to Siam Square, where most of the English language schools are. Talk to the receptionists about your desire for a work position, and leave your resume.

  6. Step 6

Buy copies of "The Bangkok Post" and "The Nation," the two English-language newspapers. Check out the classifieds to see if there are any job postings. Call the ones you are interested in and arrange for interviews.Through a combination of these methods--online, in person and through the newspaper--you should secure an English teaching job within a week.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you arrive in Thailand, give yourself a little time to get used to your new surroundings. Go for a walk, visit interesting places and get accustomed to the people and their behaviors.
  • At your interviews, smile a lot and be polite. Always dress nicely; avoid wrinkles and stains.
  • When you are offered a job, check the contract carefully. Your employer should sponsor a work visa and help you find an apartment. Also, the employer should pay at least 300 baht an hour, and you should not have to teach more than 25 hours a week.
