How to Identify a Residual Ghost
A residual haunting is believed to be the imprint of a prior event that replays at regular intervals throughout time. The ghost involved is not a living entity and cannot interact with the living. Although it is uncertain how this imprint is created, it is believed that a highly emotional or traumatic event somehow imprints on the environment, creating an image or sounds that function much like a video or audio recording. It appears that certain geological features like water and some types of stone create the ideal setting for this to take place.

1
Observe the activity carefully to determine if you are experiencing a residual haunting. Note the time and sequence of events each time ghostly activity is observed. If the events follow a pattern that does not vary and occurs at regular intervals without regard to the activity or people present, you may have a residual ghost in your presence. A residual haunting may repeat at regular intervals, but the intervals may be nightly, weekly or even yearly. It is not uncommon for the event to replay on the anniversary of the precipitating event or on other important dates in the life of the residual ghost.

2
Look for other explanations before jumping to the conclusion that you are being visited by a residual ghost. If you suddenly hear footsteps on the stairs every night at 2:00 a.m., check to be sure your neighbors don't arrive home from work at that time or your cat hasn't chosen that time to rattle and roll with his nightly excursions.

3
Recreate the activity you are experiencing if possible. If some unseen force suddenly moves family photos around on the mantle every evening, recreate the event. Slam doors, stomp around, go into the next room and close the dresser drawers. Any of these motions, although they may seem unlikely at first glance, are potential explanations for the activity.
-
4
Share your experiences with a family members or close friend and enlist his help. Ask a friend to sleep over or ask family members, preferably a spouse, to stay awake with you to see if he experiences it too. Listen to his reactions carefully and work together to brainstorm possible explanations.
-
5
Document activity that defies rational explanations. Snap digital photos or set up a video recorder in the area where you observe activity. If the activity involves sounds or voices, set up a digital recorder and try to capture them on tape.
-
6
Join paranormal groups or forums, if the activity bothers you or makes you uncomfortable. Talking to others who have experienced similar events often makes it easier to deal with paranormal events. Remember a residual ghost can't hurt you; he doesn't even know you are there. Think of it as an old movie replaying events that happened a long time ago.
