Step 1
Remember that your teen is a teen. This is a phase and this too shall pass. Keep repeating that mantra in your head.
-
Step 2
Pull out pictures when you were a teen. One look at the tight psychedelic pants, platform shoes and free love t-shirt, you’ll begin to soften your stance regarding your teens clothing fad.
-
Step 3
Keep the lines of communication open. Don’t let the clothes ruin the relationship. Beneath those clothes, as awful as they may appear, is the child you gave birth to. The clothes are an outward expression of your teen’s individuality (it doesn’t matter that the rest of the teens in his school are wearing the same expression of individuality). Tolerate the outward expression as long as the inward family values are still in tact.
-
Step 4
Try it on for size. If you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em as the old saying goes. Shock your teen by showing up at his soccer game in the same style of clothes. Be careful with this one, it might backfire on you. Your teen might love your new look and embrace it while the other parents shun you.
-
Step 5
Take pictures. Several years from now when your teen brings his fiancé home to meet the family…you got it. Pull out the picture. The expression on your child’s face will be worth the stress and aggravation of living through the fad.
