Things You'll Need:
- puppy training pads
- small dog treats (the smaller, the better)
- leash
- outdoor potty area for puppy
- paper towels
- sanitizer
-
Step 1
Place puppy training pad on floor of your home, as far away from your puppy's sleeping and feeding areas.
-
Step 2
Observe your puppy for signs that it is time to go potty. These signs tend to include whining or whimpering and walking around in circles with nose to ground. If you see these behaviors, pick your puppy up and carry him to the puppy training pad.
-
Step 3
Place your puppy on top of the puppy training pad and give the command to use the bathroom. I have had great success with "go potty" and "clean out" when training my puppy. Just remember to pick a command that is distinctly different from the puppy's name and be consistent each time you give the command.
-
Step 4
Now make sure puppy cannot leave the puppy training pad. Stand and watch puppy until he relieves himself.
-
Step 5
Once the puppy relieves himself on the puppy training pad, provide him with a treat. Be sure to pet behind his ears and say things in a soft voice: "Good boy!" or "Great job!"
-
Step 6
Repeat steps 1 through 5 consistently.
-
Step 7
After the first week of successful training, start moving the puppy pad closer to the front door (or whichever door you will use to let your puppy go outside). Remember, move it a couple inches at a time at most.
-
Step 8
After a couple of weeks, you'll start placing the puppy training pad outside on grass/dirt/yard and giving puppy the command to "go potty" outside on the pad. It won't be long before you can remove the puppy training pad altogether and let puppy "go potty" outside!
