Auto insurance is expensive, especially when you are a student on a budget. But with some planning and preparation, you can get an affordable insurance plan for your car while attending school.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • time and effort
  1. Step 1

Like all shopping, you need to shop around the different insurance companies to find the best deals on car insurance for students. Major auto insurers include GEICO, AIG, Allstate, Nationwide and State Farm

  2. Step 2

To qualify for the lowest rates and discounts, try to follow as many of the guidelines below:

  3. Step 3

Maintain good grades. Some auto insurance companies offer discounts if you maintain a B average or higher. Bring proof of your grades when applying for a policy.

  4. Step 4

See if you can get other discounts, like having multiple policies. You may be able to get a discount by combining a renter's policy with your auto policy. Also, family discounts are sometimes offered if family members are also customers.

  5. Step 5

Drive reliable, practical cars that get good gas mileage. Sports cars or cars that are targeted by car thieves will cost more to insure. Including safety features in the car, like airbags and anti-lock brakes, can lower premiums. Also, anti-theft devices/alarms can also reduce your cost of insurance.

  6. Step 6

Increasing your deductible can lower your premiums. The deductible is the amount you pay before the insurance company is required to pay. You can reduce your monthly premium cost by increasing your deductible amount.

  7. Step 7

Drive less. If you live near campus, walk or ride a bike. Some insurance companies will offer discounts for low mileage use.

  8. Step 8

Drive safely. Having a clean driving record, free of accidents and traffic tickets, will go a long way to keeping your insurance costs down while you are student and beyond.
