Where Can a Low Income Mother Find Housing?

A low income mother can find housing for herself and her children through a number of methods. Many of these methods were put in place by the U.S. government, so they are 100% safe and legal. It will take a lot of questions and many forms will need to be filled out, but a persistent mother can find quality housing for her family using the methods below.

Instructions

1. Go to your local Health and Welfare Department and talk with a social worker about housing programs that are available in your area. Every city is different, and this is the perfect place to start to find out what options you have.

2. Contact the local Housing Authority and ask for a list of houses and apartments where the rent is based on income or is specifically for low income families. Many of these work on a sliding scale and can customize your rent for your needs.

3. Contact your local US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) office. Many times, HUD works with renters to get low income housing for those that need it. They will walk you through the process of applying for a home or apartment, or, you can go through the process online.

4. Talk to your child's counselor or social worker at school. Government run head starts, especially, have people who can help mothers with the process of finding affordable housing.

5. Make sure to fill out all of the paper work that is given to you and provide all of the necessary information that each program requires, such as social security numbers, birth certificates, copies of bills and work verification forms.
