There are many reasons why you might have to change your baby's outfit: they spit up on themselves, they go to the bathroom on their outfits, or any other number of things that babies always seem to get themselves into. The only thing you need to do is change their clothes correctly.

Things You'll Need:

  • A new outfit

    Changing a Baby's Outfit

  1. Step 1

Make sure they are in a safe position to be changed. When you put your baby down to begin to change their outfit, you need to be sure they are in a comfortable and safe position. Don't sit them on an angle or with their head cocked to one side of the other. Make sure they are comfortable and safe before you begin. This is most important.

  2. Step 2

Take off their dirty outfit. Carefully, gently take off their clothes. Slowly unbutton all of the snaps and zippers, and make sure you don't catch their skin in them in any way. Make sure when you are working around their head you are very careful. Do not just jerk a shirt off like you might over your own head. You must carefully remove the clothing from their heads such that you don't bother the baby or compromise the neck. This is incredibly important.

  3. Step 3

Clean off the baby. If you are going to change their outfit for one reason, clean them off. This can mean wiping up anything that might be on them, looking at their diaper to see if it needs to be changed or even applying some sort of cream or lotion if you want to. Clean the baby off well while you have the opportunity so that you won't have to fuss with them at a later time when they might be sleeping.

  4. Step 4

Put on their new outfit. Place the outfit on the changing table, or the area where you are changing the baby. Open it up and place the child down on top of the clothing so that their head is resting exactly where it should once the outfit would be on.Place their arms through the arm holes first (if necessary) carefully, making sure not to get them caught, and remember, the baby won't help you much at all. Then begin to button up their outfit, making sure to place their feet in the proper place, whether that's through foot holes or inside of a nightgown.

  5. Step 5

Fix the outfit. Now that the outfit is on, just fix up the ends. Make sure their arms are correctly placed and the sleeves aren't bunched; make sure their feet are okay and fit nicely into the foot holes; make sure to pull down the outfit so that it is not bunched up on them - that is not very comfortable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be extra careful with a baby's head. He cannot control it for the first few months and you must make sure to always be supporting his head and neck securely.
