Chrysanthemums are plants with beautiful flowers and soft grey-green leaves. The plants have been cultivated for over 2,000 years. Thousands of variations have been developed. As potted plants, chrysanthemums are popular gifts for a hostess. Used for corsages, centerpieces and cut flower arrangements, chrysanthemums are the perfect gift. Available in every color and size for fall, these flowers are a symbol of long and healthy life.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Give a chrysanthemum corsage for a special occasion. A corsage is a single flower or a small bouquet that can be worn on a jacket, dress, waist, or wrist. Florists make corsages with custom ribbons, nets and bangles. Chrsyanthemum corsages are popular for school homecomings, weddings and birthdays.

  2. Step 2

Make a party special with a chrysanthemum centerpiece. Chrysanthemums are long-blooming and will last beyond the party. This makes a mum centerpiece a fine holiday or hostess gift. It can be used on a dinner table, entry hall, mantel, or coffee table.

  3. Step 3

Search garden centers for miniature chrysanthemums in containers and hanging baskets. The mini chrysanthemums partner with herbs, dwarf marigolds and other autumn flowers. Decorate the containers and hanging baskets with holiday accents and ribbons for patio or entry display.

  4. Step 4

Choose mass-market chrysanthemums for an impromptu gift. Add foil and a ribbon for gifting. Most market mums are for decoration and are not hardy enough for transplant to gardens.

  5. Step 5

Select hardy garden chrysanthemums for garden gifts. The flowers are not as showy for indoor exhibit, but the plant is usually more compact with sturdy stems to withstand outdoor weather. These chrysanthemums are usually found in garden centers and nurseries. These gifts can be transplanted into the garden. They are outstanding flowering perennials.

  6. Step 6

Look for unusual chrsyanthemums. Give a mum that is pruned like a small tree or topiary. It is a great home decor gift.

Tips & Warnings
  • Recycle a shabby potted chrysanthemum plant as compost.
  • Do not let pets chew on chrysanthemums because the plants can be mildly toxic. Contact your veterinarian if your animal has eaten off a mum.
