How to Avoid Motion Detectors

A motion detector is a type of alarm system that detects any changes to light waves in a room. Movement, sound and even temperature can cause changes in the light waves. That doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to avoid a motion detector. You can do this by changing your body temperature, using a piece of glass or by limiting the amount of noise you make by walking through the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Make as little noise as possible, even removing your shoes before you step onto the floor. The detector picks up any sounds as this causes the light waves to bend. Any amount of noise can sound the alarm, but by making no noise you may be able to avoid the detector.

Watch the light from the motion detector to see where it moves. The easiest way to avoid a motion detector is to avoid stepping in front of it. Some of the older models move in a distinct pattern, allowing you to see where it goes and avoiding those areas.

Increase or decrease your body temperature. Most motion detectors are set to detect changes in the light frequency that occurs when a human walks into the room. The light frequency changes based on an individual’s body temperature. Raising or lowering your temperature to mimic the temperature of the room can help you avoid the detector.

    • 4

Move as slowly as you can while walking in front of the motion detector. The simple act of walking can disrupt the air and set off the detector. Walking slowly and standing still for long periods of time can fool the detector into thinking no one is there.

    • 5

Use a piece of glass in front of your body. A motion detector sends out a light wave through the room, but when it encounters glass, the light wave bounces back. A piece of glass that covers your whole body will cause the motion detector to think it has encountered a wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wearing black clothing only works in the movies. The color of your clothing doesn’t affect the motion detector; it will notice black as easily as hot pink.

  • Even following the steps outlined here can set off a motion detector. The newer models notice any changes to the light frequency, or atmosphere in the room and will set off the alarm.
