Learning how to throw a knife so that it will stick in a target requires a lot of effort. This is one of those tasks that requires a bit of practice. Everyone loves to see those movie scenes where the knife gets thrown and sticks into the intended target, straight as an arrow. To get to this level, you will make many throws that just bounce off and fall to the ground. If you are serious about knife throwing, start with purchasing a knife that is meant to be thrown. Throwing any other type of knife will result in a broken blade tip. The technique described her is based on the knife turning 1/2 turn, or revolution. There are other ways, but this method works well for short distances. Once mastered, you will be amazed just how hard you can throw a knife. Above all, be very careful when throwing knives and do not take chances--be safe, not sorry.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Find a suitable target for the throwing knife. Make sure that the throwing area is clear of people and objects that you do not wish to stick a knife into.

  2. Step 2
    Grasp it firmly

    Grasp it firmly

Grasp the knife by the point. Most throwing knives are flat and do not have sharpened edges so you can hold them comfortably and safely. Hold the knife firmly with your thumb on top of the blade, using your fingers to squeeze the knife tightly between thumb and fingers

  3. Step 3

Stand 10 to 12 feet from the target. Look at the target and point the knife at the same spot. Move your arm backwards and with a baseball type throw, throw and release the knife.

  4. Step 4
    Analyze the throw

    Analyze the throw

The knife should travel one half turn and stick solidly into the target. If this did not happen, analyze what happened and make adjustments. If the knife stuck in the target with the handle pointing down, either back up a step or two, or grasp the knife closer to the point. If the knife stuck in the target with the handle pointing up, either move closer to the target by a step or two, or choke up on the blade, grasping it closer to the middle of the knife.

  5. Step 5

If the knife just bounces off the target, it may be hard to determine how it hit. Make some of the adjustments mentioned previously until you can properly judge what is happening. Make the adjustments until the knife sticks solidly and is close to being straight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to throw stiff armed so that the knife does not spin wildly.
  • A closed cell styrene archery target works well for knives.
  • Throwing knives can be extremely dangerous. Wear eye protection and make sure the area is clear. Do not take chances with throwing knives.
