How to Buy a Gram Scale

Whether you are measuring small items such as letters and postcards to be mailed, or heavier items such as articles of jewelry, a gram scale can be a very useful item to have. Buying one is just a matter of figuring out what you want, doing some research and making a purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide exactly what you need your gram scale for and what kind of options you will want it to have. Gram scales come in many different sizes and types. They can measure from one-hundredth of a gram to one-tenth of a gram, can fit in your pocket or be large enough to sit on a table. Some are made specifically to weigh things such as jewelry or precious stones, while others are made more for items such as mailing packages or food. Because the scales can be so different depending on what it is made to measure, it is a good idea to list out exactly what you want to measure with it so you can purchase the right item. Otherwise you may spend money on a scale that won't serve the purpose you need it for.

    • 2

Go online. Sites such as SaveonScales and GramScales offer many different options and choices, with detailed information about each item as well as reviews of the products from people who have actually bought them. You can write down brand names, sizes, prices and more, so that when you go into an actual store you will have information in front of you that you can refer to (see Resources below).

    • 3

Check out gram scales in actual stores. They can be found at retailers as varied as Bed, Bath & Beyond and Best Buy, as well as Cabela's and Target. At some stores they will be located in the electronics sections, at others they will be located in the kitchen appliances section, and at sporting goods stores like Cabela's they can be found in hunting and fishing sections. Once you have found the scales, do some price comparisons and check the availability of the brands and types that you are interested in. If the prices are vastly different than what you have found online, you may want to talk to someone in management to see if the store does price-matching.

    • 4

Decide which gram scale you wish to purchase. Make sure to weigh the pros and cons of each item you are interested in, and pay attention to costs and any budget concerns you have.

    • 5

Purchase your gram scale. If you find the best product online for the most affordable price and are willing to pay for shipping and handling, then buy online. If you found what you wanted in person at an actual store and the item is available and within your monetary means, go there to purchase it.
