How to Play the Raga Manavi Scale on the Guitar

The Raga Manavi scale is based on Indian classical music. The unique scale structure of the Raga Manavi is the secret for a beautiful and airy sound. In addition to being a wonderful sounding scale, the Raga Manavi is also a great practice exercise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Begin the Raga Manavi scale by locating the A string on your instrument and playing the third fret with your first finger. This is the root.

  2. Step 2

    Stay on the A string and play the fifth fret with your third finger. This is D, the second degree of the Raga Manavi scale.

  3. Step 3

    While still on the A string, play the sixth fret with your fourth finger. This is E flat, the third degree of the Raga Manavi scale.

  4. Step 4

    Continue on to the D string and play the fifth fret with your third finger. This is G, the fourth degree of the scale.

  5. Step 5

    Stay on the D string and play the seventh fret with your third finger. This is A, the fifth degree of the Raga Manavi scale.

  6. Step 6

    Remaining on the D string, play the eighth fret with your fourth finger. This is B flat, the sixth degree of the scale.

  7. Step 7

    Continue to the G string and play the fifth fret with your first finger. This is C, the seventh degree of the Raga Manavi scale.

  8. Step 8

    Finally, return to the root of the Raga Manavi scale by playing steps seven through one in reverse order.

Tips & Warnings
  • When practicing try to make your transitions between strings as smooth as possible. Play slowly until your changes sound even.
