How to Make Designs With Nail Polish

Save

It’s easy to make fancy designs on your nails using polish and special effects which you create yourself. (Your new nails can cost less than a salon might charge, too.) Remember to start with a good manicure and clean, dry fingernails without any polish on them. If you’ve used hand cream or lotion, make sure it’s absorbed into your skin before you begin so you don’t smudge fresh polish. You can have a new nail look in about an hour, just right for a special evening.

Things You'll Need

  • Several shades of nail polish
  • Clear nail polish for a top coat
  • Fine glitter, small sequins or tiny stickers
  • Plastic spoon
  • Magazine
  • Sharp scissors
  • Begin at the base of each nail and paint on a slanted stripe of polish. Putting two or more colors of polish on each fingernail in a diagonal pattern is a very effective new look. Wait for it to dry before adding the next stripe. Continue until each nail is done. This looks really great with black and white stripes on a slant or three shades of one color to match a special dress.

  • Pour a small amount of fine glitter into the plastic spoon. Paint a base coat of polish on the first nail and wait just a second so the polish doesn’t run. Turn your hand over and quickly dip the nail into the glitter. If you want a clear coat of polish over the glitter, pour a small amount of clear nail polish onto a piece of waxed paper and use it. That way you don’t mix glitter into the bottle of clear polish if some sticks to the brush.

  • Put a small sequin on each nail, sticking it to the almost-dry base coat of polish and then brushing a clear coat over it once the base is fully dry. (If you’re using sequins which have a hole in them, turn the sequin so the hole is on top and not against your nail. This will make the sequin cup your nail better and not get snagged or pulled off.)

  • A tiny sticker of a flower or butterfly can be put on each nail. And for something that won’t be seen on anyone else’s nails, cut out miniature pictures of purses, shoes or anything else you like from the old fashion magazine. Repeat Step 3.

  • You can also cut out printed letters from the magazine and put your name or your sweetheart’s name on your nails. Use a clear top coat again so the letters don’t wear off too quickly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always have a window open or a fan circulating the air in the room when you’re doing your nails. The fumes from drying nail polish make some people light-headed.
