Instructions

    • 1

Look at your car stereo and determine how it is attached to your dashboard. Some stereos use spring mounted clips to connect with the car. To remove these, you will need a pair of universal U-shaped stereo removing tools. Referred to as DIN tools, they are available at most hardware stores and specialty car shops. Simultaneously insert the DIN tools into the openings on both sides and the stereo should come out smoothly.

Use a screwdriver to remove screws and bolts if the stereo is bolted to the dashboard. This may take some investigation as to how to find all of the screws. Check the ash tray and glove box. Keep track of all the screws, bolts and clips that you remove – you will most likely need them for future use. There is special trim removal gear available, but first try using a screwdriver if you want to save that expense.

Disconnect the stereo from the car’s electrical connectors. You might need to temporarily remove the antenna cable in order to reach the connectors.

    • 4

Detach the stereo’s power connection. It is located near the driver’s side.

    • 5

Disconnect the wiring harness connector. It connects all of the wiring for the speakers into a plastic connector. This is located at the back of the stereo.

    • 6

Replace all the pieces removed from the dashboard after successfully removing the speakers. No exposed wired or mechanical parts should be visible. If you reach an impasse during this step, the best idea is to contact an experience mechanic to ensure everything is reattached properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the car’s engine and lights are off before beginning the process of removing the stereo.
