If you have a laptop computer you want to sell, selling it locally is most likely the best option. The benefits of selling your laptop locally range from saving on shipping to damage control to having a smoother transaction.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camera
  • Paper and markers for fliers
  • Local newspaper
  1. Step 1

Advertise the laptop on Craigslist on the Internet. This is a free online community, broken down into states and cities. Once at the website, pick your state, then pick the closest city from the list. Click on the “post to classified” link on the left of the page and follow the instructions. The post remains for 30 days so there is plenty of time to sell.

  2. Step 2

Place a flier on local bulletin boards around town. This is another free method. Place a flier in stores, laundromats or other places with community boards. The flier will need your contact information and should probably have strips with this information for people to tear off.

  3. Step 3

Contact computer repair services. The repair guy may or may not buy the computer, but might allow you to post a flier or ad at the shop. You might also try a trade-in deal for another model at a discounted price.

  4. Step 4

Check out a swap shop if your town has one. While this will be free, you should be aware the owner of the swap shop will be looking to buy the laptop as cheaply as possible. Do not expect to get much money.

  5. Step 5

Place an ad in the local newspaper. It will cost money to place the ad, for a particular number of days. The advantage in selling your laptop via a local newspaper is the coverage area of the newspaper.

  6. Step 6

Post your laptop on eBay. This option will also cost money in listing fees. If you specify local sale only, and that the winning bidder must pick up the computer, you will save in shipping and handling. Use a simple description when listing the computer, and always use more than one picture of the computer, as this helps it sell quicker.

Tips & Warnings
  • When delivering your computer, use a neutral location.
  • Wipe out all personal information from the computer before selling it.
  • Take payment in cash or a local bank check to avoid being scammed.
