If you are tired of your blade looking dull and not cutting well, you can quickly and easily sharpen and polish it. If a blade isn't sharpened, it can be dangerous and ineffective. However, if you can clean a piece of metal and run it through a sharpener, you can complete these steps without a problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Abrasive sponge
  • Standard blade sharpener (see resources below)
  • Knife polish
  • Microfiber rag

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Scrape off any residue on the blade, using an abrasive sponge. Do a thorough job before continuing.

    • 2

If possible without damaging the handle, soak the blade in hot soapy water. After allowing it to soak for several minutes, remove it from the water and wipe it clean with a rag. Then, dry the blade as completely as possible.

    • 3

Run the blade gently through the edge-removing groove of a standard blade sharpener. Run it the full length of the blade, from side to side, pressing very gently. Then, repeat the process several times.

    • 4

As gently as possible, run the blade through the fine sharpening groove of the blade sharpener. Complete this step slowly and carefully, as it will define how sharp the cutting edge of the blade really will be. Be sure to slide the blade through the sharpener between three to seven times.

    • 5

Blow off the blade to remove loose metal particles. Now, coat the blade with knife polish. Work with small amounts at a time and work it into the metal with a microfiber rag. After fully coating the blade, give the entire surface another rubdown with the rag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the blade as completely as possible to make for a better polish.

  • Be very careful when working with sharp blades.
