If you're having trouble coming up with ideas for a maternity Halloween costume, try painting your pregnant belly like a jack-o'-lantern. While this popular costume can seem a bit challenging to create, once you get organized it really isn't difficult at all. When finished, this Halloween costume will be a memorable one. Technically, this is your baby's first Halloween, so be sure to have your friends or family take some pictures for the two of you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Orange shirt
  • Orange pants
  • Paper and pencil
  • Non-toxic body paint
  • Felt
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Chipboard
  • Glue
  1. Step 1

Get an orange shirt and black or orange maternity pants. Trim the shirt so that it ends above your belly. Hem the edge of the shirt.

  2. Step 2

Create your jack-o'-lantern design in pencil on a piece of paper. Try a number of different styles of eyes, noses and mouths and compare them to see what you like best. Try to favor smiling, happy pumpkins with flat teeth or no teeth. Also use basic shapes such as circles and triangles for the eyes and nose.

  3. Step 3

Select some non-toxic body paints. Stand in front of a mirror, and hold your paper design so that it's reflected in the mirror, as well. Lightly and carefully mark the features of a jack-o'-lantern face in orange paint. Paint an orange circle around this.

  4. Step 4

Paint inside the lines of the jack-o'-lantern, leaving the inside of the eyes, nose and mouth unpainted. Then paint the inside of the features yellow. Paint over the edges of the jack-o'-lantern with black paint, including the outside circle. Then paint black lines down the jack-o'-lantern to indicate the pumpkin's striations. Curve the lines outward on the left and right, then gradually decrease the curvature as you move toward the center.

  5. Step 5

Create a pumpkin stem hat out of green felt and a toilet paper roll. Wrap the felt around the roll and mark off just enough felt to cover the roll. Then cut it out. Trace the edge of the roll over a piece of chipboard. Cut out a circle from the cardboard which is about four inches in diameter. Cut a piece of orange felt to cover the circle. Hot glue the felt to both the toilet paper roll and cardboard circle. Glue the cylindrical section to the circle. Then punch a hole on each side of the circle. Place an elastic strap through the holes, and attach the hat to your head.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save this Halloween costume idea for indoor parties and evenings when the weather is warm.
  • If you feel that you can't manage painting your own belly, get someone else to paint the pumpkin for you.
