How to Make Sugar Wax?

Sugar wax is used as an alternative to wax for hair removal. Waxing with sugar is called sugaring or hallawa and has been done for thousands of years, starting with the ancient Egyptians. Sugar wax can be made at home for a fraction of the price that it would cost to buy in the store. An added benefit of homemade sugar wax is that it lacks any harmful chemicals that some store products contain.

Things You'll Need

• 2 Cups Granulated White Sugar
• 1/2 Cup Lemon Juice
• 1/2 Cup Water
• Large Cooking Pot
• Wooden Spoon
• Glass Jar and Lid

Instructions

1. Combine 2 cups granulated white sugar, 1/2 cup lemon juice and 1/2 cup water in a large cooking pot. A tall cooking pot works best because it prevents the sugar mixture from splattering out of the pot when cooking.

2. Place cooking pot filled with sugar mixture on the stove and cook over high heat. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon.

3. Turn down the heat on the stove when the sugar mixture starts to boil. Continue to stir sugar mixture constantly.

4. Allow sugar mixture to simmer while stirring constantly until the sugar fully melts and the mixture turns a light golden brown. Once the sugar is melted and the mixture is a light golden brown, remove the cooking pot from the hot burner and let cool.

5. Allow the sugar mixture to sit until it is cool enough to touch.

6. Pick up cooled sugar mixture and shape it into a ball. Stretch and pull the mixture until it is a even golden color throughout.

7. Shape sugar mixture into a ball and place in a glass jar. Place a lid on the glass jar to store for later use. Sugar mixture can be warmed up at a later time, by placing the jar in hot water.

Tips & Warnings

• If the sugar is not fully dissolved, the mixture needs to be heated longer.

• The sugar wax will be thick and resemble the consistency of caramel.

• The sugar mixture will be extremely hot when cooking and can cause third degree burns. Use caution when making sugar wax to prevent injury.
