How to Do a Low Single Leg Takedown in Wrestling

At the beginning of a wrestling match, both competitors start on their feet and work to secure a takedown, which scores points and puts the attacker in a dominant position behind their opponent on the ground. The low single leg is a useful takedown technique similar to the single leg takedown, which requires more quickness an accuracy but less strength and overall effort to score a takedown.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Drop your level so that you are in a position to drive toward your opponent's legs.

  2. Step 2

    Drive forward toward one of your opponent's feet, and grab that foot around the outside at the heel.

  3. Step 3

    As you grab the heel, bring your head low so that it is on the inside of your opponent's calf on the leg you are attacking, near the knee. To get in this position, you will have to stay much lower to the ground than you would during a normal single leg takedown.

  4. Step 4

    Pull your opponent's heel in and under you as you use your head to push the knee outward, out and back in the opposite direction. As you pull the heel under you, use your free hand to assist with exerting force on his leg, drawing it under you even harder. This will take away one of your opponent's points of balance and throw off his center of gravity, causing him to topple backward.

  5. Step 5

    As he topples, stay close behind to score a takedown. Most opponents will quickly bail out into a strong base in response to being caught by a low single, but if your opponent is slow in reacting, you might be able to work up and keep him on his back.
