How to Write High School Op-Ed Articles
Part of being a good journalist is about being as objective as possible. However, op-ed articles (opinion-editorial articles), are a student writer’s opportunity to voice his or her own opinion in a publication. To write a good op-ed article, you still must consider the basic tenets of journalism to ensure that you are including the vital information in your article. You must remember to present a well-informed and informational article that will help your readers either cement their own opinions, or cause them to consider the opinion of the other side.

1
Pick a topic that is open to debate. Good topics are always relevant to your readers. Perhaps your school is implementing a new policy within your school that has split the faculty, staff, and students with different ideas on how to handle the issue. This would be a great choice for your paper. Pay attention to the news section of your student and local newspapers for information that has led you to forming an opinion on an issue.

2
Do your research. Find out as much as you can about the topic. With the right research, you will be able to develop a well-informed opinion. Rushing to write about your position on the matter without first knowing the facts about the situation is a surefire way to lose credibility with your readers. Become as knowledgeable as you can about both sides of the story before choosing your stance.

3
Pick a side. Only after you have considered both sides of the story should you form your opinion. Take notes as to why you have chosen your stance. These notes will help guide your article. Make sure your sources are reputable enough to feel comfortable basing your opinion on.
-
4
Consider the opposing side. Considering the argument of the opposing side of your argument will help you cement your own stance. Make a list of the points your opposition may consider. Then answer those points so that they fit into your argument. Be sure to include these in your article.
-
5
Get writing. Follow basic article writing rules; this means to include a lead paragraph that grabs the attention of your reader. Then include your supporting details, putting the most important information towards the top of your article.
-
6
Read it aloud, edit and rewrite as necessary. The rewriting and editing process is nearly as important as the initial writing process. Do not skip this step as it will directly influence the impact and credibility of your article.
