Apple's iTunes continuously outdoes itself. As soon as you are familiar with an iTunes edition, Apple upgrades the software with new features. iTunes 8 comes with a handy new feature called Genius. This application automatically matches your existing music with songs or albums that you might like. It also gives you the option to buy the similar music without leaving your library. It is free to use and very simple.

Things You'll Need

  • iTunes
  • Internet connection
  • Download iTunes 8. If you do not have iTunes, go to the official website to download it (see Resources below). If you already have iTunes on your computer, you should get a software update asking you to download the new version. If you haven't been prompted to upgrade, go to the "help" tab on the top of the screen. Once the drop-down menu appears, click "Check for updates," and from there you should be able to download the new software.

  • Add the Genius application. Once you have successfully downloaded the new iTunes, click on your library. In your library, you will see the Genius sidebar, which will ask if you would like to activate the Genius application. To learn more, you can click on the "Learn more" button on the side of your screen. This will bring you to a page that details what Genius is all about.

  • Activate Genius by clicking on it. The next screen will ask you for your account information so it can connect you to the iTunes store. You can also create a new account on this page if you don't already have one. Read the terms of agreement and click on the box to agree to the terms and conditions.

  • Genius will begin to compile a list of compatible songs to your playlist. To make a Genius playlist click on the "Genius" tab under "Playlist." Genius should begin compiling your favorite songs into a playlist.

  • To use the Genius sidebar to see what other songs you may like from the iTunes store, go to your library and click on a song. On the left side of your screen is the Genius sidebar that will update its selections with each song you choose. From the sidebar, you can easily purchase a new song or album that compliments your existing playlist.
