Starting a pet rescue is a noble undertaking, one that is challenging as well as rewarding. If you love the friendly and vivacious pug breed, running a rescue for them can be a wonderful idea. To run a successful pug rescue, you need to learn the rules and follow all the correct procedures. You will also need passion for the breed, determination, and often, a strong constitution. Being an advocate for these sweet little dogs can be satisfying and even fun, but at times it can be heartbreaking. Almost always, it is worth it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Medium sized dog carrier
  • Food dish
  • Water dish
  • Collar
  • Leash
  • Dog grooming tools
  1. Step 1

Call your local city or county authorities to find out what the procedures are to be classified as a non-profit organization. If you plan on housing more than three pugs over the age of 4 months at any given time, you must apply for kennel status.

  2. Step 2

Once you have obtained your non-profit license, and kennel status if necessary, visit your local Animal Shelter. Tell them that you are starting a pug rescue and would like them to list you for referrals.

Contact veterinarians in your area and see if one will provide medical care for your fostered pugs at a discount. Many veterinarians are glad to do this, especially if you agree to work with them exclusively.

  4. Step 4

Provide a quiet, comfortable space for newly rescued pugs. Many times they are frightened and confused, and need to be separated from other pets, children, or even adults as they adjust to a new situation.

  5. Step 5

Organize a network of foster people that you can work with to make sure all the pugs you rescue will have a temporary place to stay. Contact large pet rescue organizations to find out the best way to do this. Even if you have kennel status, the amount of dogs needing shelter may exceed your capabilities.

  6. Step 6

Build and publish a website for your rescue organization so people in your area can learn about what you do and find out how you can be contacted. An increasing number of people turn to the Internet these days to search for information

Become a member of a nationwide pet rescue organization so you can be listed with them as a pug rescue in your area. Take advantage of their resources for the help you need to get and stay successful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Each breed of dog has different needs. Be sure that you know how to care specifically for pugs, and that you have this information documented for the people who adopt them.
  • Follow up on all adoptions that go through your rescue to make sure the dog and its new family are a good match.
  • The cost of feeding and caring for dogs is high. Donations and adoption fees may not cover everything, so be prepared.
  • Many people look to adopt pugs on a whim because they look so cute. Make sure every potential adoptee meets rigorous qualifications and knows the responsibilities before you agree to place a dog with them.
