How to Make a Tinkerbell Dog Costume

Around the Halloween season, many people like to dress up their dogs. Tinkerbell, the fairy from the story "Peter Pan," is a good choice for female dogs. You can make this costume with very little investment in time and expense. However, there are a few guidelines to follow if your dog is to be both pretty and happy on Halloween evening. As long as you choose the right fabric and accessories, both of you can have a good time.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose light weight green fabric for the body of the costume. If possible, get something with a shimmery surface. Measure your dog's length, chest size and waist size to get the dimensions for the bodice.

    • 2

Find a dog costume sewing pattern which encloses the dog's torso (see Resources). Ensure that it's the right size for your dog before purchasing and cutting the pattern. Cut and sew the bodice so that it provides some extra room for the dog to move. However, don't cut it so loose that it drags on the ground while she walks.

Make a small tutu out of green tulle, a type of netting found in most fabric stores. Depending on the size of the dog, you need 1 to 2 yards of the material. Trim the tulle to about 2 inches in length for a small dog, 4 inches for a medium dog and 6 inches for a large dog. Then cut the material into 4-inch wide strips. Make an elastic waistband the right size for your dog's waist. Leave the elastic piece open and attach long strips of Velcro to the ends. Bunch up the strips of tulle at the top and sew them to the elastic waistband.

Draw some wings on a piece of chipboard, such as a cereal box. Make them as slender as possible, since lighter wings are more comfortable for your dog. Paint them blue, then join them in the middle with hot glue. Attach the wings to two or four elastic strips, and place Velcro on the ends of these as well.

Make some soft green booties from the same material you used to make the bodice. Attach white pom poms to the area just above the toes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try the costume on your dog and take it for a test run before Halloween to ensure it's comfortable for her.

  • Choose synthetic fabrics to save money.

  • You can make the entire bodice with a Velcro closure. This makes the costume easier to put on and increases your pet's comfort.

  • Look at a picture of Tinkerbell to get the shape of the costume and wings.

  • Never put anything tight or binding on your dog, especially around her throat or waist.
