Applying Clown Makeup

While it may look easy, applying clown makeup is an art that is very time-consuming. In fact, many clowns say it takes them a good 30 minutes. The process can be particularly involved in the United States, where it is undesirable for clowns to show any facial skin at all.

Things You'll Need

  • Headband or shower cap
  • Makeup
  • Makeup sponge
  • Baby powder
  • Eyeliner
  • Makeup brushes
  • Cotton swabs
  • Hand towel
  • Soap
  • Warm water

Instructions

    • 1

Clean and dry your face thoroughly to remove all the grease and grime.

    • 2

Pull your hair back and secure it with a headband or shower cap.

    • 3

Apply a base color of grease-based clown makeup with the makeup sponge. For most clowns, this color will be a white base coat. Apply a thin coat and let it dry. You can then apply another coat until you reach the color you want.

    • 4

Use your eyeliner and a small brush to trace around your eyes and lips. You don't have to use black; you can opt for any other color, including red or brown. You can also use a cotton swab to accentuate the lines.

    • 5

Dust your entire face with baby powder. This sets the makeup and prevents it from smearing.

    • 6

Enhance your eyebrows at this point if you desire. Some clowns just take dark brown eyeliner and color their brows dark.

    • 7

Color your cheeks with red clown makeup. You can either color your nose with the red or use a red ball nose.

    • 8

Dust your face one final time with the baby powder, and you are set to go. If you have gotten makeup on your hands or there are smudges on your face, use a small towel, soap and some warm water to wipe them off.

Tips & Warnings

  • When choosing the red makeup for your cheeks, pick a cream for a brighter look or a powder for a softer look.

  • If you want to avoid powdery lips, use real lipstick instead of clown makeup.

  • To remove clown makeup, try using baby shampoo. It works to break down the oils in your hair, so it does the same thing for your makeup.

  • Use baby wipes to remove the makeup from around your eye area.

  • Use cream or oil-based clown makeup. Water-based makeup will smear and streak.
