Instructions

  1. Pumpkin Faces

    • 1

Start by choosing any block of wood that you can find. See if there is one somewhere around your home or use scrap that is usually free at a building supply store. Any size will work for this project.

    • 2

Sand the block to remove any splinters or sharp edges. Dust it off with a damp rag.

    • 3

Paint the block of wood orange. Let it dry.

    • 4

Paint a spooky or funny Halloween face with the black and white paint colors. Let it dry before continuing.

    • 5

Hammer in the nail at the back of the wood block. Only allow the nail to go into the wood a quarter of the way. You do not want the nail to come through to the face of the pumpkin or take a chance of splitting the wood block.

    • 6

Glue raffia to the top of the wood block for hair on the pumpkin. Tie ribbon to the nail and hang it up on a wall.

    • 7

Make several different pumpkin faces together for a great decoration. Hang them over the fireplace or sit them in the window.

    Wooden Napkin Holder

    • 8

Start by cutting the plywood into three pieces. You will need two 5-by-5-inch squares and one 5-by-3-inch rectangle.

    • 9

Lay out the rectangle piece of wood flat on a table. Use the carpenter’s glue to glue down one of the squares to the right side of the rectangle.

    • 10

Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth before continuing. Use a clamp to hold the pieces together until they dry.

    • 11

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with the opposite side of the rectangle. Now both sides of the napkin holder should be secured and dried to the rectangle. You can secure it further by putting two nails at the bottom of each side of the napkin holder.

    • 12

Decorate the napkin holder with different color paints and patterns to make it unique. Let the paint dry before using it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spray the napkin holder with polyurethane to keep the paint from chipping.

  • Avoid letting children make wooden projects on their own. Adult supervision is necessary.
