How to Stay Safe When in College

  1. Step 1

Make it a rule for yourself and your roommate to leave each other notes when you’re running out, even if it’s just to grab dinner.

  2. Step 2

Keep your cell phone on you at all times. You never know when you’re going to need it, especially in an emergency.

  3. Step 3

Don’t walk anywhere alone at night. If you can’t walk with a friend, call campus security to walk with you to your dorm room or car. Store the campus security number in your cell phone in case you need it.

  4. Step 4

Whether you’re in the room or running out, even for a few minutes, lock the door.

  5. Step 5

Don’t park on streets where there is no light and few people. Also, make sure to check around and in your car before getting in.

  6. Step 6

Be aware of crime on and around campus.

Tips & Warnings
  • Trust your gut. If you feel uncomfortable while talking to someone or you’re headed into an area that you’re getting a strange feeling about, leave immediately.
  • Get your own drinks and keep them in your hand at all times.
