Halloween is coming up soon and it’s time to choose a costume to wear for the festivities. Buying a costume from the party store or costume shop can be very expensive, so, why not put together a costume that’s creative and will catch the attention of those around you. Here are some tips on how to dress like a cowboy for Halloween.

- Jeans
- Pair of chaps
- Button down shirt
- Vest

Wear a pair of jeans. Choose a pair of jeans that are somewhat tight fitting (not skin tight, just not baggy or droopy). The pants can be light or dark colored.

Wear a pair of chaps. The chaps can be made of suede or leather. If you don’t have access to leather or suede chaps, create a pair of your own. Get a pair of jeans that are larger than the jeans you are wearing. Cut the seat out of the pants and you now have a pair of homemade chaps.

Wear a button down shirt. You can wear a shirt that is a solid color or plaid. Button the shirt up all the way and tuck the shirt into your jeans.

Wear a vest. Choose a vest of a neutral color, such as brown or black. Wear the vest over the button down shirt. If the vest has buttons, you can either button the vest or wear the vest open.

Wear a holster over the jeans. You don’t need to carry a gun or a toy gun, but the holster will enhance the look of the costume.

Wear a belt. Choose a belt that has a buckle on it. The buckle can have any type of emblem on it, whether it’s as simple as an oval or in the shape of a horse.

Wear a red bandanna. Tie the red bandanna around your neck. Make sure the tied part of the bandanna is at the back of your neck.

Wear a cowboy hat. Choose any color wide brimmed hat to wear with your costume.

Wear socks and cowboy boots. If it is going to be cold outside, you might consider wearing heavy socks. Wear your cowboy boots under your jeans.

If there are some pieces to the costume that you don’t have lying around the house, check out a thrift store or garage sale. You can also find items on Craig's List or eBay.
If your costume is dark in color, carry a flashlight with you and pay attention to your surroundings. Walking in the dark in a dark costume can make it hard for drivers to see you.
