Crochet can be as simple as creating a chain that goes through an entire skein of yarn, but it can also involve complicated patterns to help you create anything from an afghan to a sweater or a hat. If you are trying to learn, then a knowledge of the basic stitches is a must, followed by the ability to read a simple crochet pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the top of the crochet pattern. It will tell you whether the pattern is simple (beginner, easy), intermediate, or advanced. Start with an easy pattern.

    • 2

When you come to the initials "ch", read "chain". The step is requiring that you use the chain stitch.

    • 3

When you come to the initials "sc", read "single crochet". The pattern is requiring that you use the single crochet stitch.

    • 4

When you come to the initials "dc", read "double crochet". You should perform the double crochet stitch.

    • 5

When you see the initials "tc", read "triple crochet". You should do the triple crochet stitch.

    • 6

Start the pattern with the required number of chain stitches, then turn the chain over in your hands and go back the other way as instructed by the pattern.

Tips & Warnings

  • Intermediate patterns may add "WS and "RS", which indicate wrong or right side of the project. This means front or back, and helps you figure out where to stitch.
