There are so many easy papier mache projects that require you to do so many extra steps in forming the shape of the object. In this article, you will learn how to set up the papier mache and to dress it like a pumpkin.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Newspaper strips
  • Papier mache paste
  • Washable orange paint
  • Balloon
  • Bag of assorted candy and trinkets
  1. Step 1

Blow up the balloon. The amount of candy that you will be able to fill the papier mache pumpkin will depend on the size of the balloon. Blow up a large balloon and tie the end securely with a knot.

  2. Step 2

Mix papier mache in a large bowl according to the package directions. Tear newspaper into strips and dip in the bowl of paste.

  3. Step 3

Begin layering the newspaper strips on to the balloon. Cover the entire balloon first, then begin layering strips until a papier mache ball has formed. This will take three or four layers.

  4. Step 4

Allow the papier mache ball to sufficient time to dry. This process may take 24 to 48 hours.

  5. Step 5

Puncture the balloon and fill with candy and trinkets.

  6. Step 6

Paint the papier mache ball orange. This may take three or four coats of paint. When paint is dry, poke two holes to enable you to tie a narrow nylon cord. The cord will hold the pinata while it is being hit.

Tips & Warnings
  • When breaking the pinata, hang in a secure location, away from anything fragile.
  • Never allow onlooking children to stand near the pinata.
