Instructions

    • 1

Having killed the Whitetail Deer, drag it to a level area to begin the gutting process. Put on the latex gloves and prepare your knife.

    • 2

Flip the deer onto its back, legs straight up in the air and spread the front and back legs away from one another.

    • 3

Beginning at the bottom of the "paunch,' make a small incision into the body cavity. Continue the incision from the base of the paunch up to the base of the rib cage. A large, sharp knife or a small saw is often needed to cut through the rib bones.

    • 4

Reach inside the body cavity and locate the deer's esophagus.

    • 5

Cut the esophagus as close to the base of the skull as possible. Continue cutting membranes from around the organs from the skull down to the hip bones.

    • 6

When you are sure all of the membranes have been cut, roll the deer to one side and pull the "gut pile" out of the body cavity.

    • 7

Using the shovel, dig a hole, place the gutpile in it, and cover it up. Remove you latex gloves, clean off your knife and then drag your freshly gutted deer carcass back to camp for skinning and meal preparation!

Tips & Warnings

  • Always keep your knives sharp! There is nothing more dangerous in the skinning/gutting process than a dull blade.
