The holiday season is approaching and soon homes will be decorated with fresh Christmas trees, festooned with lights and glittering ornaments. Every year, natural Christmas trees catch fire and cause damage to homes and injury to people.You can make your own Christmas tree preserver and fire preventative with ingredients available at local hardware and drug stores. Enjoy a safe holiday season and keep your Christmas tree fresh.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 gallon hot water
  • 1 cup ammonium sulfate
  • 1/2 cup boric acid
  • 2 tbsp. borax
  • 8 tbsp. 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
  • Pine oil emulsion
  • Spray bottle
  1. Step 1

    Purchase ammonium sulfate, boric acid and hydrogen peroxide from a local pharmacy. You can find borax and pine oil emulsion at a hardware store.

  2. Step 2

    Combine 1 cup ammonium sulfate, 1/2 cup boric acid, 2 tbsp. borax and 8 tbsp. of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in a glass container. Add pine oil emulsion to the mixture for aroma. This is the fire-retardant.

  3. Step 3

    Fill a spray bottle with the solution and spray the Christmas tree daily.

  4. Step 4

    Fill the Christmas tree stand with a cup of the liquid and keep filled as long as the tree stands.
