Make a Yo-Yo Christmas Tree

This yo-yo Christmas tree decoration uses the old technique of yo-yo-making usually reserved for quilting. The yo-yo Christmas tree decoration is simple to craft by using graduated sizes of yo-yos. It is a wonderful take-along project for the car, doctor's office or the sidelines at soccer games, because it requires no machine sewing. Make several for a winter wonderland of Christmas trees to display together.

  • Hand-sewing needle
  • 1/8-inch wood dowel, 6 inches

  1. Step 1

Draw a nine inch circle on the Christmas fabric and cut out for the bottom tier for the yo-yo Christmas tree decoration.

  2. Step 2

Stitch a running stitch around the edges of the circle using the green thread and the hand sewing needle. Pull the gathers together tightly. Tack the end and knot. Snip the thread. Flatten the yo-yo with the gathers on the top and in the center of the circle.

  3. Step 3

Draw an 8-, 7-, 6-, 5-, 4- and 3-inch circles for each of the next tiers on the yo-yo Christmas tree decoration . Repeat Step 2 for each of the yo-yos.

  4. Step 4

Glue one end of the wood dowel into the wooden spool using the craft glue. Allow the glue to dry.

  5. Step 5

Poke the top of the dowel through the center of each yo-yo, starting with the largest and ending with the smallest. If the dowel won't poke through the yo-yos easily, snip a small slit in the centers using the scissors.

  6. Step 6

Hot glue the gold star button to the top of the dowel.

  7. Step 7

Tie a bow using the 1/4-inch red ribbon and glue at the base of the gold star button.

  8. Step 8

Tie 10 bows using the 1/8-inch red ribbon and glue, randomly, around the yo-yo Christmas tree decoration.

  9. Step 9

Sew the red buttons, randomly, to the yo-yo Christmas tree decoration using the gold thread. Tie the gold thread into a knot on the top of the buttons.
