The Boston Public Library is now offering to loan audiobooks without even entering the library. With their new overdrive software, you can download an audiobook to your iPod or any other portable music device. Now your morning commute can make you smarter. Mac users beware: the software for apple computers isn't available yet.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Library card
  • Portable music device
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Go to the the library's website and click on the downloadable audio book link on the homepage. This will bring you straight to the page where you can rent and download audio book, but now you are getting ahead of yourself. First you need to download the free software onto your computer. Download overdrive by clicking on the man with the headphones on the left of the screen. Make sure to download the version that is compatible with your computer (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Register the software. You may need to register the software you just downloaded. If you downloaded a version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to read e-books, you have to authorize your computer. Follow the your computer's directions if you need to register your software. Remember, everything should be totally free to download, so if you are asked to pay money, you are downloading the wrong thing.

  3. Step 3

Choose your book and enjoy. Once everything is installed, all you have to do is choose your book and check it out. Browse the list of titles on the overdrive page and put books on hold or check them out. After choosing your book, you will be required to enter in your library card number, so be sure to have that handy. You can check out audio books for 14 days. Once the 14 days are up, the title is just returned to the library.

  4. Step 4

The check-out procedure can be a little complicated. Once you add a book to your cart, it remains there for 60 minutes. It is like you are putting it on reserve and after that it will be open once again to other library members. You can have up to 10 items in your cart, but they will disappear if you don't check out a title after an hour.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't check out more books than you can listen to in 14 days.
