Things You'll Need:

  • PC-based computer
  • Internet connection

    Buying the Game

  1. Step 1

Purchasing from the Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) store. Like most online multiplayer games, DDO is available directly from the DDO website. This will allow you to download and play the game within a short amount of time and usually at a lower cost than purchasing it from a brick-and-mortar store. The downside is that all accompanying material is also digital and can be difficult to access while playing. For more information of the DDO Store, see Resources below.

  2. Step 2

Purchasing DDO from a third party site. Direct2Drive is a well-established service which allows the user to purchase and download a variety of PC-based video games. As with purchasing directly from the DDO website, Direct2Drive allows you to play the game within hours of purchase and is a little cheaper than purchasing the physical game disk and accompanying material. For more information on Direct2Drive, see Resources below.

  3. Step 3

Ordering the disk online. Comparative shopping for DDO is extremely easy when shopping online. Several sites, such as Amazon, have DDO for sale and can ship it to you within a few days. The downside to this is, of course, the wait time though you will be able to access the handbooks and other resources within arm's reach while playing. Most online stores offer cheaper prices than brick-and-mortar stores and can offer sales prices that are unavailable elsewhere.

  4. Step 4

Buying it at a local store. There are dozens of nation-wide and local stores which offer DDO, such as Best Buy, Circuit City, or Toys 'R' Us. Purchasing the game this way allows you to take it home and begin playing it within hours of purchasing it as well as having the source materials readily available. The disadvantage is the time involved in getting to the store, inability to compare prices, and the higher cost of owning the physical materials. Still, this is an excellent way to shop if you are purchasing the game for someone else.

  5. Step 5

Finding a "used" copy of DDO can save you time and money. Unlike other games, used copies of online games are not keyed to a specific user. The same program is loaded onto your hard drive, but since a separate account is required, it is possible to have multiple users using a single disk. Check out local listings of Craig's List or garage sales for a cheap way to purchase DDO. The disadvantage is that finding Dungeons and Dragons Online through this method is hit-and-miss.

Tips & Warnings
  • Whenever purchasing something online, always be sure of the place or service you are considering has safeguards in place to protect your identity. There are several website which purport to be selling products which are actually hoaxes; if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
