George Washington was the first president of the United States and a hero of the Revolutionary War. He is one of the forty-plus reasons we celebrate President's Day, which occurs on the third Monday of February each year. (Washington's real birthday was Feb. 22.) This year, honor his memory by crafting a George Washington doll out of a toilet paper roll.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Photocopy a picture of George Washington's face. It doesn't matter if the copy is color or black and white. You can get a picture of George Washington from your history book, or you can print out a picture of him online.

  2. Step 2

Cut the face out and glue it onto the top of the toilet paper roll. If you don't have a picture or a copy machine, glue a quarter to the top of the toilet paper roll.

  3. Step 3

Cut out a long piece of blue construction paper that can wrap around the toilet paper roll. It should only reach to the face you pasted on. Glue it in place. This is Washington's suit.

  4. Step 4

Cut out a white triangle of construction paper and glue it on with one point facing downward. Place it just under the face to make it look like the white shirt Washington wore under his blue suit.

  5. Step 5

Cut out a narrow strip of black construction paper to serve as his belt. Glue it around the figure's waist to separate the top from the bottom of the suit.

  6. Step 6

Draw and cut out two hands from white or beige construction paper. Glue one to each side of the toilet paper roll.

  7. Step 7

Give Washington his customary three-pointed hat by cutting out a blue triangle and pasting it above his picture.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want a tall George Washington, use a paper towel roll instead of a toilet paper roll.
  • Small children should use age-appropriate scissors.
